Going virtually unnoticed by any Artfest shareholder, Apple Computer earlier this month filed for several new patents regarding the iPhone. Among other things, - The ID patent is interesting - it cites, as examples someone in an art museum looking at a piece of art which can pick up detailed information about a particular exhibit.

When I first heard about Artfest’s plans to bring RFID into the art world, I knew that the company was on the right track. At the very least and if you consider the amount of fraud that has infested the art and collectibles world, then these markets need some sort of central identifier to evaluate the authenticity of a work. RFID’s flexibility is perfect for the art and collectible’s market.

Apple would not be including an RFID reader on the iPhone unless they thought that this market was bigger enough to drive consumers to the iPhone platform. If it’s bigger enough for Apple, just think how big it is for Artfest.
